From an early age, Grass was driven by an insatiable curiosity about the world around her. Growing up in Colombia, she faced challenges head-on, responding to the impossible with a defiant "I'll figure it out." This mindset has become the cornerstone of her academic and professional life.

Her academic path began with a fascination for language and communication, studying philology and education. This interest in complex systems and their communication laid the foundation for her future endeavors. When she moved to the United States and embarked on a career as a medical interpreter, her scientific interests took a new turn. The interactions between physicians and patients with neurological disorders sparked a deep curiosity about the brain and its role in shaping communication.

The Body's Unspoken Language

Working alongside clinicians, Grass witnessed the limitations of traditional diagnostic methods. Despite advancements in medical imaging and diagnostics, clinicians often rely on isolated snapshots of biological processes, failing to capture the dynamic nature of the body's communication. This realization led her to delve deeper into neuroscience and immunology, understanding the interconnectedness of the nervous system and the immune system.

"The body is a complex network of communication," she reflects. "We still lack the tools to truly understand its language." This insight became the driving force behind her pursuit of a PhD in medical engineering and medical physics at Harvard-MIT.

In the Bioelectronics Group led by Professor Polina Anikeeva, Grass is developing soft bioelectronic devices that seamlessly integrate with soft peripheral tissues. These devices continuously monitor multiple physiological signals, providing a comprehensive understanding of the body's communication. By enabling electrical recording and stimulation of neural circuits, her work opens up new possibilities for earlier disease detection, more precise therapies, and a paradigm shift in bioelectronic medicine.

"The scientific question was bigger than any one discipline," she notes. "HST taught me to begin with biology, not disciplines." This interdisciplinary approach has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding, as she navigates the complexities of materials science, systems physiology, device fabrication, bioelectronics, and surgery.

A Mother's Perspective

For Grass, her work has taken on a profound personal significance since becoming a mother. Her two school-age children inspire her to develop technologies that will shape the future of medicine, enabling earlier disease detection and personalized treatments. "I want to contribute to a future where medicine understands the body's physiology well enough to predict disease and give families more healthy years together," she says.

A Global Citizen

Beyond her scientific pursuits, Grass is a global citizen with a passion for understanding different cultures. She co-founded the Graduate First-Generation Low-Income Student Group at MIT, creating a supportive community for students from diverse backgrounds. Her love for travel and food connects people across cultures, and she believes that every culture has its own unique language and way of understanding the world.

"I've realized that every culture has its own language and every scientific discipline its own way of understanding the world," she muses. "My goal is to help medicine understand the principles that govern communication across the human body in health and disease."
