One such girl is Cat, a Year 12 student who plays internationally for Spain. She's been a cricket enthusiast since she was 10 years old, and the recent Test match has only fueled her enthusiasm. Cat is particularly drawn to the leadership skills displayed by England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, and she's eager to bring these qualities to her own captaincy at RGS Worcester next year.
"Nat Sciver-Brunt is one of my role models," Cat explains. "I've looked up to her ever since I started cricket when I was 10, and seeing her step into the role of England captain has been so inspiring and something that I would definitely want to take on to RGS next season."
Elsa, another student at RGS Worcester, is captain of the Under-15s team and has been playing cricket at school since she was in Year 3. She agrees that the sport builds good teamwork and leadership skills that can be applied to life beyond the cricket field.
"I think it builds good teamwork and leadership skills that you can take into life," Elsa says. "More schools should offer it to girls as a sport."
Naomi, a 15-year-old student, is also inspired by the England women's team. She hopes that the sport's growing popularity will change the perspective of those who still see it as primarily a boys' sport.
"A lot of people say it's mainly a boys' sport, and then they see how strong our team is," Naomi says. "They are like 'oh my gosh, I didn't know that a girl could bowl so fast or a girl could hit that far.'"
Esme, another 15-year-old student, is excited to go and watch the Test match at Lord's. She's particularly drawn to the way the crowd gets involved and the way that everyone backs their country.
"I think just seeing the way the whole crowd get involved and the way that everyone backs their country... obviously we're used to it in football and men's cricket, but seeing them all with the England flags at the girls' cricket is very inspiring," Esme explains.
In my opinion, the impact of the England women's team on young girls like Cat, Elsa, Naomi, and Esme is profound. It's not just about the sport itself, but about the role models and the inspiration they provide. The England women's team is changing the way people think about cricket, and it's doing so in a way that is both powerful and inspiring. Personally, I think that this is a trend that will continue to grow, and that the future of cricket is bright for women and girls everywhere.
